The module will provide you with a broad and critical understanding of the structure and functions of the English legal system. It will ensure that you have a fundamental understanding of the nature and methods of law and academic legal study in order to provide you with a sound basis for studying other undergraduate law modules.

As part of the module, you will undertake a Team Development Programme where you will be mentored through group and team work exercises. These groups will constitute virtual law firms which will be the basis for small group teaching throughout the whole first year of study. All modular, non-law and Erasmus students who are not able to work in groups will complete an individual project about a specified legal institution.

This module has a co-requisite of any one module from: LAW1003; LAW1004; or LAW1035. The module is available to interdisciplinary pathways and Flexible Combined Honours students. It is suitable as both a part of the Qualifying Law Degree and also non-specialist programmes.
