This course introduces you to the basic precepts of conflict mapping in order to support you to conduct in depth research about a contemporary South Asian conflict. Lectures and seminars will occur in a bi-weekly pattern. In each two-week block a specific theme from conflict literature theory will be introduced. The lectures will illustrate the empirical application of theoretical approaches with reference to the conflict in Sri Lanka, which you will then be expected to continue to research in the context of your own case study. The military and political dynamics of the conflict are taken as the backdrop for studying the ‘everyday’ of conflict; how ordinary men, women and children survive, negotiate and experience endemic conflict and the resources that they use to help them. You will be expected to produce a final project compiling a conflict map and supporting essay about your chosen case study (these will be showcased at an end of course workshop), as well as comparative writing bringing in the Sri Lankan case study.
No specialist knowledge, skills or experience are required to take this module. It is suitable for specialist and non-specialist students. The module is suitable for students studying Politics, Geography, FCH and History.
