POL3078: Soviet and Post-Soviet Politics

Module Content

Syllabus Plan

  1. The historical development of the Soviet state, 1917-1991; competing interpretations of its political system and the causes of its collapse; its political, social, cultural and economic legacies in contemporary politics.
  2. Contemporary Russian politics; political-economic developments under President Putin after 2001; competing theoretical approaches to the contemporary Russian state.  
  3. A survey of politics in non-Russian, post-Soviet states, covering Ukraine, Belarus, the Southern Caucasus and Central Asia; theories of state-building, democratisation, political change, and conflict.
  4. The role of post-Soviet states and actors from the region in international relations, including the role of Russia in both regional and global politics.
