PHL1008: Philosophical Readings 2

Module Aims

The aim of this module is to familiarize students with one of the key texts in contemporary thinking and provide grounds for understanding its continued influence in, and significance for, moral and political philosophy as well as late 20th century (and beyond) genealogical approaches to epistemology.

On successfully completing the programme you will be able to:
Module-Specific Skills1. Gain familiarity with the seminal ideas, arguments and philosophical methods of Utilitarianism;
2. Demonstrate a philosophical perspective influential in, and useful for, most if not all areas of contemporary learning;
Discipline-Specific Skills3. Gain valuable experience in the understanding and making of arguments, the appreciation of the historical and social context of production of a philosophical text, and the ability to criticise it;
Personal and Key Skills4. Understand how to get to the heart of a problem and to argue coherently and cogently (which is of value in any professional undertaking).
