In this course we will read Arthur Schopenhauer’s magnum opus “The World as Will and Presentation” (Vol. 1, 1819). Schopenhauer is one of the great German philosophers of the 19th century, an original, powerful thinker and a brilliant writer. His metaphysics of the will led the Kantian revolution in metaphysical thinking into a completely new direction, paving the way for, among others, Freud and Nietzsche. The book is divided in four sections, each dealing with a different aspect of the whole that makes up our world (epistemology, ontology, aesthetics, and finally ethics). The book is long and not easy, so participants need to be prepared to read a lot and have a genuine interest in fundamental philosophical questions about the nature of the world and our place in it. We will read the whole book and discuss the most salient sections in as much detail as possible. Note that this module is taught in seminar style, so there will not be any lectures.
