In this module you will learn how to read social practices and social contexts by analysing cultural artefacts – how to understand what objects tell us about the society in which they were made. In a short theoretical introduction we will explore the significance of material objects and symbols for social life and look at ways of interrogating practices around them. We will then engage in practical exercises to make everyday artefacts speak so they reveal implicit meanings. In the process we will question taken-for-granted assumptions about social life. In the process you will develop the creative and imaginative capacity crucial for the formulation of research questions and hypotheses. No prior knowledge skills or experience is required in order to take this module. It is suitable for both specialist and non-specialist students.
