This module explores the concept of gender and how it shapes the workings of the contemporary military. It adopts a comparative approach to examine how the global efforts to reshape gender perceptions and statuses within the contemporary military institution is being impacted by social context. Drawing from disciplines such as sociology, international politics and feminist political science, and focusing on the Nigerian military, the module approaches the subject matter from a global perspective, encouraging a non-Eurocentric analysis of the issues of gender culture and gender integrationist policies in the military. It asks a number of conceptual questions that encourage empirical historical awareness and critical engagement by students. It examines the interactions between the international and the national, the liberal and traditional social systems in the adoption of gender integrationist policies in non-western militaries and the nature of impact that is produced compared to what is observable in western militaries. The module will explore topics such as, How gendered norms and practices shaped the military’, ‘Feminist debates on women in the military, Increased Women participation and integration in the contemporary military, The Nigerian military and a gender integrationist policy, Gender integration policies and contextual impact in Western and non-Western militaries, and the Degendered and Regendered military.
