This module will examine the application of current learning theories (e.g. behaviourism, constructivism, social constructivism, models for the learning of concepts, situated learning, communities of practice and activity theory) to key aspects of teaching and learning in science that can present particular challenges such as practical work, numeracy and literacy. You will build on experience and practice to develop your critical analysis of relevant theories, research evidence and policy to focus on the relationship between theory and practice when planning science lessons. You will develop skills in undertaking research and developing your own practice in teaching a science topic that is of particular interest and relevance to you. The module will therefore support you in developing your subject knowledge and related pedagogy in a specific area of science. To take the module you will normally need to be a practising teacher of science in a primary, secondary or FE context.
