Exeter collaborates with Chinese University on Takeover Law workshop

The University of Exeter and Tsinghua Law Schools are organising a joint workshop gathering together experts on takeover law. The workshop, entitled Takeover Law in the New Era of Globalisation: A UK and China Perspective, will be hosted at Tsinghua Law School on Sunday 20 May.

Corporate takeovers are increasingly common in China, as they provide an efficient method for competition, consolidation, and restructuring. China has come to embrace takeovers as a market practice and is seeking directions for further reform in its law, regulatory model, and banking system. Researchers and policy-makers are currently developing options in response to these needs and this seminar will focus on the policy choices for China by looking, in particular, at the frameworks of the UK Takeover Code and the EU Takeover Directive.

The Exeter Tsinghua workshop will address this important international issue, bringing together an array of experts for a series of panel discussions. The principle organiser of the visit, Dr Joseph Lee from Exeter’s Law School, is a specialist in companies and commercial law who regularly provides advice to central banks and government agencies and gives training to the judiciary.

The workshop will provide a framework for discussion around the lessons China can learn from the UK and EU models, before looking at how China might adapt these models to suit the specific challenges presented by takeover law in the country. Four panels on different aspects of takeover law will be held throughout the day, with contributions from members of the Tsinghua Law School, industry experts and other invited academics. A full itinerary for the event, as well as profiles for the speakers, is available here.
