College hosts Associate Dean International from Macquarie’s Faculty of Human Sciences

On April 4th, 2018, Professor Lynda Yates, Associate Dean International for the Faculty of Human Sciences at the University of Macquarie, visited Exeter to discuss new opportunities for both universities to work together.

The universities share a warm relationship, with a series of visits taking place over the last few years. The universities have a student exchange programme, and last year signed an agreement to offer a double degree programme for research students. Two students in Biosciences have already taken up this opportunity.

During the visit, Prof Yates met with a number of colleagues from the College of Social Sciences and International Studies (SSIS) to look at ways of encouraging collaborative research activity between our institutions. Founded in 1964 in Sydney, Macquarie is home to 40,000 students across a broad range of disciplines. They are particularly strong in a number of research areas that are highly relevant to SSIS, placing in the top 100 in the QS Subject World rankings for subject areas including Education, Psychology, and Philosophy.

Exeter and Macquarie enjoy a number of links in these areas. Prof Yates met with academics from Exeter’s Sociology, Philosophy and Anthropology department to discuss the development of new connections and projects in the field of cognitive science. The philosophy of cognitive science is an area of shared expertise between the institutions and a number of possibilities for joint working in this area were discussed. Similarly, Prof Yates met with representatives from the Graduate School of Education to discuss opportunities in the field of applied linguistics and in education. It is hoped that the visit will act as a catalyst for further inter-disciplinary research to take place between Exeter and Macquarie.

SSIS’ Associate Dean for International and Development, Prof Andrew Massey, said of the visit ‘It has been very valuable to welcome a fellow Associate Dean International to Exeter for a day of networking and planning future activity. A number of academic colleagues in SSIS have budding research connections with Macquarie and enabling colleagues to share expertise can only be of benefit to both universities.’
