My Grand Challenge Experience

My Grand Challenge Experience by Meriam Meddeb (Chevening Scholar), MA Applied Security Strategy

The MA Applied Security Strategy is unique as it is a mixture of theoretical and practical knowledge. Taking part in this year’s Grand Challenges has given me the opportunity to share knowledge about current global security challenges to a group of enthusiastic students.

During the week, I've learned four main things.

I realise how much knowledge I have gained when presenting certain topics to an engaged audience who then ask challenging questions.

  1. Acting as an educator gave me an insight into Higher Education teaching, I now have the upmost respect for my lecturers.
  2. Experience gained is, that group dynamic is crucial to the success of any group learning. Setting the right tone from the beginning and creating a safe space for people to share and ask questions is key to successful work.
  3. As an educator, participants will question and ask advice. Consequently, words, attitude and actions can affect the audience’s self-esteem and results.

Watching the students presentations gave me an immense sense of pride that makes it worth all the effort and time.
