Prevention of Violence Against Women through Bystander Intervention in Football and Sports

About the research

Gender-based violence is recognised as a global public health problem. Campaigns such as #MeToo and #TimesUp have brought the ever-expanding range of contexts in which sexual harassment and violence and abuse occurs to the forefront of public consciousness.

Research indicates the potential of bystander intervention as an effective prevention method. Developing The Intervention Initiative for the football and sports communities, this project will co-create and pilot a best practice bystander intervention working with Exeter City F.C and Exeter City Community Trust.

Working together with our co-partners Public Health England, Devon County Council, Devon Rape Crisis and the Hollie Gazzard Trust, the project will embed and evaluate the new intervention "Football Onside" at Exeter City Community Trust.
