About the research

We are all aware of the devastating impact domestic abuse has on individuals, families and communities. While we are clear that abuse should never happen, it is not always clear what we can do to stop it. Active Bystander Communities (ABC) is about helping all members of the community to speak up and challenge the drivers that lead to domestic abuse through bystander intervention. ABC is about helping people to find their own way to make an impact and make a difference. Following the success of The Intervention Initiative Bristol City Council commissioned Dr Rachel Fenton to develop a bystander programme for communities on preventing domestic abuse. In conjunction with the University of Exeter, Devon County Council, Public Health England and the Hollie Gazzard Trust are currently piloting and evaluating the programme for effectiveness.
