ANTM108: Bioacoustics

This module descriptor refers to the 2016/7 academic year.

Module Aims

1. You will be provided with research-informed insight into the sonic worlds of human and nonhuman animals, paying particular attention to the manner in which these soundworlds co-exist and influence one another;

2. You will engage critically with the ways in which sonic considerations relate to and inform wider discussions of contemporary import (such as the environmental crisis, conservation and global sustainability);

3. You will develop the ability to apply key concepts within anthrozoology, the anthropology of sound and Sound Studies to the acoustic lives of human and nonhuman animals;

4. You will be introduced to methodologies for using sound in research which they can take forward in future research or employment.

On successfully completing the programme you will be able to:

2. demonstrate a strong ability to evaluate and analyse relationships between humans and non humans using a variety theoretical perspectives on sound and listening
3. show a sophisticated understanding of the ways in which research into the soundworlds of animals informs discussion on wider topics such as the global environmental crisis
Discipline-Specific Skills4. demonstrate awareness of the advantages, disadvantages, possibilities and pitfalls of a sonic approach to engaging with interactions between human and nonhuman animals
5. show awareness of the socio-cultural influences which lead to particular representations and interpretations of animal sound
6. demonstrate an understanding how the exploration of nonhuman soundworlds challenges dominant discourse around hearing, listening, sound and noise
