This module is designed to familiarise you with the operation of the international market for marine insurance. The UK’s Marine Insurance Act 1906 has been adopted in many jurisdictions, and many policies are written on standard wording developed in London by Lloyd’s, marine insurance companies and P&I Clubs. You will examine the history of marine insurance, the operation of the market and the forms of insurance available to ship owners and cargo owners.  The module introduces you to the basic concepts of marine insurance law, including insurable interest, utmost good faith, the concept of indemnity and its consequences for insurers, and the role of London market insurance brokers. This module fits in with the modules on Carriage of Goods by Sea and Admiralty.
