POLM091: The Politics of Nonviolence
This module descriptor refers to the 2016/7 academic year.
Module Aims
This module introduces you to the range of political and institutional contexts in which nonviolence is used in contemporary world, with a strong focus on case studies, on the basis of which they will develop their own understanding of this topic. We will explore the different applications of nonviolence in different fields.
The module will also encourage you to reflect on the relation between nonviolence and policy change, using as an example the European Union.

Module-Specific Skills | 1. Demonstrate understanding of the foundations and the dimensions of nonviolence and the logic behind its effectiveness 2. Demonstrate knowledge of the political/empirical contexts in which nonviolence is used today and be able to critically reflect on new ways to apply nonviolence. |
Discipline-Specific Skills | 3. Explain in detail and apply to specific cases key theories, models and concept related to nonviolence 4. Identify, analyse, critically evaluate and compare different nonviolent strategies from the perspective of Security and Development Studies. |
Personal and Key Skills | 5. Communicate effectively in speech and writing 6. Demonstrate critical analytical skills in dealing with multiple written sources and diverse viewpoints; practice in articulating and defending positions on the seminar topics. |
