As non-state actors, especially private corporations, assume roles and responsibilities traditionally reserved for public authorities, it has become necessary to reassess the implications of the influence and power that such private entities wield. This module will give you the opportunity to assess the human rights implications of the increasing impacts of corporations in the public and private spheres and, in this context, to take a critical look at some of the initiatives that have been developed to respond to this important development. The module will devote attention to the United Nations Protect, Respect and Remedy Framework and its Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights as the latest and most authoritative global guidance lens through which to assess the subject. In this respect, the module will address issues concerning access to remedy for adverse corporate human rights impact, corporate respect for human rights with a focus on the scope of human rights due diligence and the role of the UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights in the implementation of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
