Module Content
Syllabus Plan
Whilst the module's precise content may vary from year to year, it is envisaged that the syllabus will cover some or all of the following topics:
Week 1: Sacred Sources of Islamic spirituality: the Prophet Muhammad
Week 2: Early Sufi Doctrine and Mystical Theology (8-9th centuries)
Week 3: Junayd and the School of Baghdad
Week 4: Mansur Hallaj. The School of Khurasan
Week 5: Classical Sufism and its Institutions
Weeks 6-7: Devotional & Contemplative Disciplines of Sufism.
Weeks 8-9: Abu Hamid al-Ghazali and the 12-13th century revival of Sufism
Weeks 10-11: Rumi: Life, Works & Legacy. Ibn ‘Arabi: Life, Works & Legacy.
