Immigration is one of the most important yet deeply contested of contemporary questions. Control over the entry and stay of non-nationals is considered to be a defining characteristic of modern states, yet people have always moved across national borders and continue to do so in ever greater numbers. This module will introduce you to some aspects of the legal structure of British immigration control, placing the law in its historical, political and social context, and explaining the impact of European and international law. In so doing, the course will give you insight into one of the most poorly understood yet critical factors shaping modern British society.
