LAW3040: English Legal History
This module descriptor refers to the 2018/9 academic year.
Module Aims
To introduce you to the history of the legal system and of some aspects of substantive English law.
To introduce you to the dynamic relationship between the English legal system and social, economic and political forces.
To introduce you to the use of original historical legal sources and support you in undertaking research.
On successfully completing the programme you will be able to: | |

Module-Specific Skills | 1. demonstrate a detailed knowledge and critical understanding of the evolution of English law from the late seventeenth century to the start of the First World War; 2. demonstrate a critical understanding of English law in its wider historico-legal context and the ability to demonstrate this in relation to the specific topics studied in the module; 3. undertake an original piece of research into a specific area of English legal history covered in the module; |
Discipline-Specific Skills | 4. select, integrate and present coherently and reflectively, orally and in writing, relevant law and legal arguments; 5. show an appreciation and understanding of the main materials and sources for undertaking research into modern legal history; 6. demonstrate a critical understanding of the different approaches to legal history; 7. identify, analyse and use original and secondary legal sources; 8. demonstrate an understanding of the application of different methodologies to reveal contrasting perspectives; |
