This course focuses on the causes, conduct and resolution of violent conflict in South Asia. . The lectures will illustrate the empirical application of theoretical approaches to understanding conflict with reference to the conflict in Sri Lanka and students are expected to conduct independent research on a parallel case study. This research will form the foundation for seminar activities and for the end of term written assignment. The military and political dynamics of the conflict are taken as the backdrop for your studying of the ‘everyday’ of conflict; how ordinary men, women and children survive, negotiate and experience endemic conflict and the resources that they use to help them. Your final assignment will be on a self-devised topic (suggestions involve ethno-nationalism, the role of women in conflict, humanitarian crisis), which compares your independently researched case study with the example of Sri Lanka.
No specialist knowledge, skills or experience are required to take this module. It is suitable for specialist and non-specialist students. The module is suitable for students studying Politics, Geography, FCH and History.
