This module is an opportunity for you to engage with enduring philosophical questions. There will be five topics, chosen collectively by those taking this module, but suggestions include the following. Should animals have rights? Can punishment be justified? Is there such a thing as a just war? What can the rule of law learn from anarchy? On such matters, lawyers as much as anyone should be capable of leading the public debate.
The module will be taught through weekly seminars. For each topic, you will each be allocated specific question(s) to research. You will submit a short report. All reports will be collated to produce a class dossier of collective research. You will then write an individual essay on the basis of that dossier. You will write up to five essays, and your best three essays will constitute your final grade.
If you do not contribute to the dossier, you will not be allowed to write an essay on that topic.
