Charity Law is a subject with deep historic roots and is of unquestionable contemporary significance, having regard both to the huge social and economic importance of the charitable sector and to recent judicial and legislative developments across the common law world. In this module you will learn about the not-for-profit sector and explore exactly what is and what is not ‘charitable’ as a matter of law, asking whether charities pursue political purposes, for example, whether the Temple of the Jedi Order should have charitable status, and whether private hospitals and independent schools are charitable. You will also learn from comparisons with other jurisdictions, including Australia, Canada and the rest of the UK.
