ARA3190: Intermediate Arabic Language

This module descriptor refers to the 2019/0 academic year.

Module Aims

Building on the year abroad learning experience, this module aims to develop a deeper knowledge of grammatical and syntactical structures; to develop active and passive learning of Arabic through a wide range of written and audio-visual materials; to strengthen your awareness of different styles and registers of Arabic; to broaden your skills in using Arabic; and to develop skills in composition and translation. The module also aims to consolidate the use of colloquial Arabic.

On successfully completing the programme you will be able to:
Module-Specific Skills1. Understand and competently employ grammatical and syntactical features of written Arabic and spoken Arabic;
2. Demonstrate the ability to read various genres of Arabic texts, write in Arabic, as well as translate from and into written Arabic, with and without the use of bilingual and monolingual dictionaries;
3. Demonstrate the ability to listen to and understand colloquial and media Arabic and communicate in standard and colloquial Arabic;
Discipline-Specific Skills4. Competently express ideas in Arabic in writing;
5. Confidently communicate nuanced thoughts and ideas verbally in Arabic;
Personal and Key Skills6. Employ sophisticated time management skills including in the effective conduct of independent study;
7. Communicate effectively (in written form and orally) in a foreign language indicating enhanced communication skills.
