This is an optional level 1 Kurdish language module. It will enable you to read simple texts – stories, simple newspaper articles, poems and songs – in Sorani, the dominant dialect of Kurdish which has official status in the Kurdish region of Iraq and is spoken in Iran.  You should also be able to work out the basic sense of more complex material, and hold simple conversations. The module is open to anyone who wants to learn Sorani; it is not necessary to have knowledge of any other Middle Eastern language, nor any previous knowledge of Kurdish. Sorani is closely related to Persian and, for a beginner, about as complicated as French. It is usually written in a modified Arabic alphabet, which is the form you will study it in. We try to use as much audio-visual and online material as we can to enable you to do as much practice as possible by yourself, so that you can grow in confidence.
