British politics is now in a period of unprecedented upheaval and change. Euroscepticism, nationalism, repeated and sustained threats to the two-party system, and rapid de- and re-alignment of voters and parties have ignited every touch paper within reach of the British political system. In this module, students will study British elections and voting behaviour over time as they hone their skills in the art of psephology. We will cover the ins and outs of how General Elections are called and held in Britain, commercial and exit polling and forecasting results, how elections have been won and lost over the last four decades, and the behaviour and profile of the British voter. The module is suitable for non-specialist students, and while it contains a data analysis component, careful and targeted introductory (re)training in data analysis will be provided. Experience from previous modules involving introductory data analysis, political behaviour, elections, or representation would be helpful, but are not required.
