ARA2178B: Arabic Study Abroad
This module descriptor refers to the 2021/2 academic year.
Module Aims
The aims of this module are to advance your knowledge of Arabic as a written and spoken language, and to develop your ability to switch between the two registers. You will develop your reading, writing, speaking and listening skills through a diverse range of classroom activities.
You will work on your grammar and syntax via a wide range of exercises and authentic Arabic texts, and will study dialect in order to facilitate your acquisition of spoken Arabic. Formal teaching and learning activities will be supplemented by your first-hand experience of living within an Arab society and experiencing its culture.
On successfully completing the programme you will be able to: | |

Module-Specific Skills | 1. read and understand a variety of increasingly sophisticated Arabic-language texts across a range of linguistic styles such as literature, poetry, religious texts and media; 2. recognise and deploy Arabic grammar in writing and speech commensurate with an intermediate-level speaker of the language. 3. understand intermediate-level Arabic-language audio and speech, and speak in both formal Arabic and dialect at the same level. |
Discipline-Specific Skills | 4. demonstrate appropriate fluency in a spoken Arabic dialect 5. identify, describe and use a range of linguistic forms and structures in writing and in conversation; 6. demonstrate that you have assimilated information about another culture and have experienced at first hand the cultural and social aspects of an Arab country |
