The Degree Apprenticeship in Systems Thinking for the public sector adopts an avowedly active learning approach. As such, in addition to the four term-time taught modules it is complemented by two 30 credit work-based practice modules. These modules are opportunities for apprentices to put their new taught skills and knowledge into practice in addressing interdisciplinary and complex problems faced by their organisation. These modules offer apprentices to cement and showcase their new skills and knowledge through the excellent behaviours that are going to add long term value to their organisation. The ‘problems’ that apprentices take on in module 6 are decided upon through a consultation between the apprentice, their organisation, and the module mentors-academic staff. As much as possible apprentices are supported in designing and delivering collaborative multi-organisation projects that evidence the high-level value of the core proposition of this degree apprenticeship. This is supported by apprentices being given space in module 5 to plan for collaborative work-based projects. Throughout these work-based modules apprentices are supported with fortnightly mentoring sessions with members of the Exeter team. These sessions will offer apprentices positive reflective spaces where they discuss problems, progress and gain critical coaching to help support the delivery of project. Throughout the work-based project, apprentices are encouraged to chart their progress and key milestones (as well as outputs) in the e-portfolio, which is used as the tool to assign their grade along with a final report.
