LAW1022: Legal Foundations

This module descriptor refers to the 2013/4 academic year.

Module Content

Syllabus Plan

It is envisaged that the syllabus will include the following topics in the following order although precise content and order may vary.

Week 1: Induction course (Library Exercise and work with Personal Tutor) and introductory lectures. Lecture 1 - Introduction to legal study and rationale of module / Nature and function of law. Lecture 2 - Equity.

Week 2: Lecture 3 - Structure and organisation of courts and tribunals. Give out court / tribunal observation exercise. Lecture 4 - Legal Research (students also receive group project to be handed in by the end of Term 1)

Week 3: Lecture 5 - Legal method and legal reasoning - Judicial precedent and comparative perspectives. Lecture 6 - Legal method and legal reasoning - statutory interpretation.

Week 4: Lecture 7 - Introduction to the civil justice process. Lecture 8 - NO LECTURE - COURT VISIT EXERCISE TIME

Week 5: Lecture 9 - First half of observation presentations. Lecture 10 - Second half of observation presentations.

Week 6: Lecture 11 - Legal advice and information: the role of the Citizens Advice Bureau. Lecture 12 - The legal professions.

Week 7: Lecture 13 - Access to justice. Lecture 14 - Professional legal ethics.

Week 8: Lecture 15 - Law reform and ways of thinking about law. Lecture 16 - Law reporting and reading cases.

Week 9: Lecture 17 - Alternative dispute resolution. Lecture 18 - Introduction to criminal justice.

Week 10: Lecture 19 - The Jury. Lecture 20 - The role of the police in restorative justice.

Week 11: Lecture 21 - Revision lecture. Lecture 22 - Exam Study Skills.
