ARA3145: Advanced Persian Language II

This module descriptor refers to the 2018/9 academic year.

Module Aims

This module aims to actualize your active and passive command of the Persian Language acquired in ARA3144 (Advanced Persian I) through a wide range of written and pedagogical materials, that is, by study of classical and modern Persian texts, both prose and poetry, using films and other media where appropriate. It aims to give you mastery of most all aspects of higher Persian grammar, with a deeper knowledge of its grammatical and syntactical structures, as well as to perfect further your writing and listening skills. Emphasis will also be given on giving you the ability to write modern Persian at an advanced level and the capacity to carry on conversations in Persian to the level of semi-fluency. You will develop your reading skills to an advanced level for both modern and classical Persian, using texts of various genres and historical periods.

On successfully completing the programme you will be able to:
Module-Specific Skills1. Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of the grammatical and syntactical features of written Persian and spoken Persian;
2. Read various genres of classical and modern Persian texts, to write in modern Persian, as well as to translate from both classical and modern Persian;

4. Decipher and translate classical Persian texts with minimal use of a dictionary;
Personal and Key Skills5. Demonstrate time management skills and ability to conduct independent study; and
6. Demonstrate written and oral communication skills in a foreign language.

Summative Assessment

Re-assessment

Re-assessment takes place when the summative assessment has not been completed by the original deadline, and the student has been allowed to refer or defer it to a later date (this only happens following certain criteria and is always subject to exam board approval). For obvious reasons, re-assessments cannot be the same as the original assessment and so these alternatives are set. In cases where the form of assessment is the same, the content will nevertheless be different.

Re-assessment notes

If you have been unable to attend class due to medical reasons or other extenuating circumstances, your assessment will be deferred to a later date. This re-assessment will consist of one 2-hour final exam (75%) and one major written translation exercise (Persian–>English: 25%) in the August/September re-assessment period. Due to the nature of the graded in-class tests, it is not practical (since other students have already had their tests graded and returned to them, thus making them publicly available) for these to be resubmitted by you in the August/September reassessment period, so those assignments will be replaced by a major written translation exercise.

Saffar Moqaddam, Persian Language; Book 3.

In addition to the above textbook, the required course texts will be a packet of readings selected from Buf-e Kur by Sadeq Hedayat; Dai Jan Napoleon by Iraj Pezeshkzad; Shazdeh Ehtejab by Hushang Golshiri, all photocopied in the coursepack. Some classical Persian texts from Sa'di's Golestan and Hafez's Divan, as well as some Persian prose fiction written after the Revolution will also be provided.
