Module Content
Syllabus Plan
Placements for this module will be secured by the Law School. You will be provided with suitable preparatory materials and appropriate guidance during the second year of the degree and required to complete a non-credit bearing on-line module in professionalism. You will join your employer without returning to Exeter at the start of your third year and will re-join your Exeter degree programme at the start of your fourth year. The legal placement will run from early October until the end of March. Whilst on placement you will take direction from your host organisation.
Following selection onto the LLB with Legal Placement Programme in your second year, you will be required to ensure that all necessary paperwork is completed in due time, and to attend preparatory meetings. You will be provided with contact details for both the host organisation and for Exeter University. You will be asked to maintain regular contact with the Programme Director at Exeter, who will also visit you during the placement. Your workload, hours etc. will be negotiated by yourself and the organisation hosting your placement. You must liaise with your potential final year dissertation supervisor (see LAW3047B) during your placement and keep the Programme Director informed of your dissertation plan progress.

How this Module is Assessed
In the tables below, you will see reference to 'ILO's. An ILO is an Intended Learning Outcome - see Aims and Learning Outcomes for details of the ILOs for this module.
Formative Assessment
A formative assessment is designed to give you feedback on your understanding of the module content but it will not count towards your mark for the module.
Form of assessment | Size of the assessment (eg length / duration) | ILOs assessed | Feedback method |
---|---|---|---|
Reflective log to be submitted to the Programme Director within 28 days of the end of the placement | 500 words to be completed for first department in which you are placed. | All | Written feedback |
Business Report draft | No more than 1,000 words | All | Feedback by tutor via skype or face-to-face |
Summative Assessment
A summative assessment counts towards your mark for the module. The table below tells you what percentage of your mark will come from which type of assessment.
Coursework | Written exams | Practical exams |
---|---|---|
100 | 0 | 0 |
...and this table provides further details on the summative assessments for this module.
Form of assessment | % of credit | Size of the assessment (eg length / duration) | ILOs assessed | Feedback method |
---|---|---|---|---|
Business Report | 50 | 3,500 words due within 28 days of the end of the placement | All | Written feedback |
Placement Presentation | 30 | 10 minute presentation to be delivered to a panel of placement professionals and academic representatives | All | Oral and written feedback |
Reflective log | 20 | 500 words to be completed for each term plus an additional 800 words to be focused on innovation in law / developments and future of legal profession. | All | Written feedback |
Re-assessment
Re-assessment takes place when the summative assessment has not been completed by the original deadline, and the student has been allowed to refer or defer it to a later date (this only happens following certain criteria and is always subject to exam board approval). For obvious reasons, re-assessments cannot be the same as the original assessment and so these alternatives are set. In cases where the form of assessment is the same, the content will nevertheless be different.
Original form of assessment | Form of re-assessment | ILOs re-assessed | Timescale for re-assessment |
---|---|---|---|
Business Report | Business Report, 3,500 words (50%) | All | August/ September assessment period |
Placement Presentation | Action Plan (30%) | All | August/ September assessment period |
Reflective Log | Reflective Essay 1,800 words (20%) | All | August/ September assessment period |
Re-assessment notes
Deferred students will be reassessed in the element that has been mitigated. Students will be referred only if they achieve under 40% overall. If this is the case students will then be reassessed in any elements they have failed.
Please note if students do not achieve 40% on the reassessment attempt, they will be put on to the three year variant of their programme. This module will appear on your transcript as a fail, but you will no longer have ‘with Legal Placement’ in your degree title.
