ARA3145: Advanced Persian Language II

This module descriptor refers to the 2021/2 academic year.

Module Content

Syllabus Plan

The class will be conducted mostly in Persian. Teaching includes lectures and commentary on the main textbook (Safar-Moghaddem); group discussion of the learning materials of classical Persian prose and poetry given as homework; as well as translations from English into Persian and from Persian into English will be introduced. Students will also give oral presentations (each student talks for 10-15 minutes in the class in Persian about a given topic), followed by questions by other students, replies by the presenter, and feedback from the teacher. Students will also listen to listen to Persian BBC TV broadcasts, news programmes, interviews, etc., and discuss these in groups.

Weeks 1-5. Advanced Persian Grammar (text based); study and translation of advanced Classical Persian texts
Week 6: mid-term quiz
Weeks 7-9: Advanced Persian (conversational and listening skills)
Weeks 10-11. Review of entire class

Re-assessment

Re-assessment takes place when the summative assessment has not been completed by the original deadline, and the student has been allowed to refer or defer it to a later date (this only happens following certain criteria and is always subject to exam board approval). For obvious reasons, re-assessments cannot be the same as the original assessment and so these alternatives are set. In cases where the form of assessment is the same, the content will nevertheless be different.

In addition to the above textbook, the required course texts will be a packet of readings selected from Buf-e Kur by Sadeq Hedayat; Dai Jan Napoleon by Iraj Pezeshkzad; Shazdeh Ehtejab by Hushang Golshiri, all photocopied in the coursepack. Some classical Persian texts from Sa'di's Golestan and Hafez's Divan, as well as some Persian prose fiction written after the Revolution will also be provided.
