ARA3165: Advanced Turkish Language I

This module descriptor refers to the 2021/2 academic year.

Module Aims

This module aims to:

  • Develop further your active and passive command of the Turkish Language through a wide range of written and pedagogical materials, such as classical and modern Turkish texts (both prose and poetry,) films and other media where appropriate.
  • Enable you to have mastery of all aspects of higher Turkish grammar, as well as to develop further conversational, writing and listening skills.

On successfully completing the programme you will be able to:

4. Have an appreciation of Modern Turkish as a form of communication, and Classical Turkish as a form of literature

Module Content

Syllabus Plan

Whilst the module’s precise content may vary from year to year, it is envisaged that the syllabus will cover topics related to advanced Turkish language, including grammar, writing, reading, speaking, and translating.

Teaching varies between lectures and commentary on the main textbook, readings, translation, dictation from and discussion of Turkish texts. We do translation exercises collectively; regular vocabulary reviews; reading of poetic and prose texts. Students give presentations on grammatical issues or texts which they have studied or read independently. Students will study different types of texts, historical, literary, current affairs; will learn how to matter different styles of expression oral and written. Teaching will also include Turkish media (TV broadcasts, news, interview, documentaries, as well as music and songs).
