LAW2114C: Introduction to Professional Placement

This module descriptor refers to the 2021/2 academic year.

Module Aims

The aims of this module are:

  • to inform you how to research relevant organizations and apply for placement opportunities;
  • to help you identify your own skills and personal qualities to promote yourself and stand out in a competitive environment;
  • to give you advice on how to write an effective CV, covering letter, and application form;
  • to give you advice on how to participate in interviews effectively;
  • to give you advice on how to make the most of networking opportunities;
  • to provide you with an opportunity to investigate professionalism in the workplace (including common scenarios which you may face and suitable approaches to handling those scenarios).

On successfully completing the programme you will be able to:
Module-Specific Skills1. Know how to effectively research employers to source placements and internship opportunities
2. Compose an effective and well-presented CV, complete with supporting letter, making clear links between your experience and the job description
3. Develop skills in targeted networking
Discipline-Specific Skills4. Understand how to apply skills learnt during stages 1 and 2 in a professional environment
5. Identify and investigate the range of career opportunities available and relevant to a student with a degree in law with business
Personal and Key Skills6. Develop insights into aspects of commercial awareness regarded by employers as a key competency
7. Showcase your skills, motivations and personal career development needs and promote these effectively

Module Content

Syllabus Plan

Whilst the precise content may vary from year to year, it is envisaged that the syllabus will cover all or some of the following topics:

  • Introduction to Professional Placement
  • Sessions with the Career Zone including: self-awareness, identifying individual key skills and promoting effectively, sourcing a placement, writing an effective CV and covering letter, interview techniques, professionalism in the workplace.
  • Small group and 1:1 sessions to help find placements.
  • Presentations and networking opportunities with previous placement students.
