Overview

Derek has had a varied experience in education as teacher, youth officer and administrator including Director of Education in Lincolnshire. After early retirement from Lincolnshire Derek became an education consultant. He acted as DES appointed adviser to the sponsors of the new City Technolgy College in Tyneside. Later he was a Registered Inspector, leading secondary school inspection teams. He also became a County Councillor and Chair of an education committee.  Derek's international activities included a study of school leadership in six European countries. He also chaired an OECD international project on thre role of the school leader in school improvement. He was one of a British team who helped to re-establish school inspection in China in the late 1980s.  Derek is currently a governor of two schools and a tertiary college in Somerset.

Derek has written several books and articles on aspects of educational leadership.  He is an honorary fellow of the College of Teachers, a Fellow of the RSA and and Honorary fellow of Yeovil College University Centre.

In 2012 he was awarded an MAin History at the University of Exeter.

Derek's current research is autobiographical in nature, focusing upon the historical contextualisation of a number of significant events in the history of education to which Derek contributed personally.
