Previous appointments include; Lecturer, Kingston Polytechnic (1981-1984), and Head of Law, University of Exeter (1993-1995).
Publications in employment law include two books on trade union law and sex discrimination law, as well as a standard text on labour law now in its 11th edition, soon to be translated into Albanian. Publications in legal philosophy include a book on Ronald Dworkin. A piece published in the Industrial Law Journal was shortlisted for the Kahn-Freund Prize. Recent commissions include a book on employment law theory, published in July 2011 and another on jurisprudence.
Teaching has included, legal philosophy, employment law, trusts, constitutional law, company law, family law, English legal system, legal institutions, legal method and criminal law.
He has been an adviser in numerous employment law cases in the European Court of Justice, the House of Lords and the Court of Appeal.
External Positions and Appointments
Membership of outside bodies have included Society of Legal Scholars, Middle Temple, Industrial Law Society (National Executive Committee Member), Law Society, Insititute of Employment Rights, the Socio-Legal Studies Association, the Royal Society of Arts (Fellow), the Institute of Teaching and Learning and the Higher Education Academy (Fellow).
External examining appointments (both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels) have been held at the Universities of Bath, Birmingham, East London, Kingston, Newcastle, Portsmouth, De Montfort, Loughborough, University College Dublin and the Cayman Islands.
