Exeter graduate Sajid Javid MP has been appointed the new Secretary of State for Culture.

In a tweet Sajid (Economics & Politics, 1991) said:“A privilege to serve my country as Secretary of State for Culture, Media, Sport and Equalities.”

Prior to his promotion he was the Financial Secretary to the Treasury. He became the Conservative MP for Bromsgrove in Worcestershire in the 2010 general election.

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Exeter, Professor Sir Steve Smith said:“On behalf of the University I would like to offer our congratulations to Sajid on his appointment.

“To have reached such a position in just four years since his election as an MP is an incredible achievement. We are sure he will make an important contribution within his new role as Secretary of State for Culture.”

Sajid went to state schools before securing his place at Exeter. After his graduation he pursued a successful career in banking.

He became a Vice-President of Chase Manhattan Bank in New York aged 25 and was later headhunted by Deutsche Bank to help build its business in developing countries. By 2009, when he left Deutsche Bank to stand for Parliament, he was a senior Managing Director.
